The Loveless

I'm with Creeper on this one. The Loveless cd is my second favorite cd of all time. It's unbelievably perfect to my ears. Simply put, music gets no better...

While the Electric Angels cd is brilliant, in my opinion it's nowhere close to the caliber of cd that The Loveless cd is, and Jonathan Daniel would tell you the same thing.

There was no second EA cd, unrelesaed or otherwise. The cd called "New York Times" was a bootleg put together by somebody. Had there been a second EA cd, it was going to be called either "Weddings and Funerals" or "Blue Sick World". The stuff that was going to be on it was primarily the same stuff that ended up on The Loveless cd. Most of the Loveless material was originally recorded in a typical EA style, but was later trashed in lieu of the new more adult oriented mellow sound. It's great stuff if you don't have it.

If you want to say that Dogtown Balladeers and The Loveless are similar, it's not totally wrong, but it's a bit of a stretch. Dogtown was always an attempt to clone the Dogs D'Amour. Dogtown Balladeers were essientially a rock 'n roll band. The Loveless is more of a hybrid of rock 'n roll mixed with Adult Contemporary Pop. The whole "Let's just rock and have a drink at the bar" bit that you find in Dogtown's music cannot be found at all in The Loveless. If you ever talk to Jonathan Daniel about The Loveless material, you'll find out that he was really going for something along the lines of a modern adult pop version of what he grew up listening to, which was primarily artists from the old days of storytelling country music. Jonathan LOVES stuff like Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, etc.

Man it's great to see people on here talkin' about the Jonathan Daniel bands! He's THE best!

i have a couple bootlegs of the loveless on video. great stuff, little and i mean little bars in nyc. i also have the video for The Return of the Ex Girlfriend.

Dogtown Balladeers are more bluesy where the Loveless are more pop. think dogtown coming from the rolling stones school of rock and the loveless sounding more like candy did. go figure right? kyle vincent and gilby clarke even make an appearence on tales of gin and salvation.

if you like dogtown you should check out jeremy and the suicides. very similar. ronnie from kix played guitar in the band. they (jeremy and ronnie) changed the name to the slimmer twins and released a cd but not nearly as good as the jeremy and the suicides release. J from VLD co-wrote a song on the jeremy and the suicides release and when they first relocated to la kelly from VLD was jamming with them.

It's hard to say. You have all types on this board that are into many different styles. Most people on this board think the Electric Angels album is better than The Loveless album. I obviously totally disagree, but the truth is, it's just what your tastes are...

It is my belief that The Loveless cd is one of the few truly great albums, from beginning to end, ever. However, your personal perception of it will depend a lot on how open you are to a much more mellow, adult contamporary sound. The Loveless was NOT rock music. If you like mellow, melodic pop with amazing lyrics, you will love it. If you want it to kick you in the balls, look elsewhere. It is great, but my experience over a decade of talking with Jonathan Daniel fans is this: People who first fell in love with Jonathan's songs listening to Candy tend to think The Loveless is absolutely amazing. However, and for what reason I don't know, people who fell in love with Jonathan's music first listening to Electric Angels tend to find The Loveless a little boring.

thats interesting because i really don't like Candy. I fell in love with the Angels when i saw them open for Danger Danger right before they released their cd. thought Shane was a mike monroe clone with black hair on stage. (thats a good thing in my book) But for as much as i love the Angels, The Loveless is THAT MUCH BETTER.

Dogs D'Amour = Rowdy, drunken bar.

Loveless = Dark, smokey, quite jazz-based bar with drunks hunched over the bar and keeping to themselves.
